Untitled, Mark Rothko, 1969 Painted on paper as opposed to large scale canvas because by this stage  his aortic aneurysm had left him too weak to do larger pieces.  The  smaller size makes me feel that it has a far more intimate quality and  sense of vulnerability about it, which I really like.  I think it is  important to consider the fact that he committed suicide the year after,  as much as I hate forcing the artist’s oeuvre into a narrative of a  progression towards an end.
